U.S. President Donald Trump announced a new round of “America First” tariffs on Thursday via his Truth Social platform, starting with a 100% tariff on all brand-name drugs manufactured outside the United States.
The announcement also formalized steep tariffs on other key sectors. The United States will now impose a 25% tariff on all imported heavy-duty trucks and a 50% levy on all imported kitchen and bathroom cabinets. Set to take effect with remarkable speed on October 1, 2025, the measures represent the administration's most audacious use of protectionist policy to date.
The imposition of a 25% tariff on heavy-duty trucks will impact major manufacturers in Europe (such as Volvo and Daimler) and Asia (such as Isuzu), which serve the U.S. logistics, shipping, and construction industries.
He explained that with this measure, “our great heavy-truck manufacturers, including Peterbilt, Kenworth, Freightliner, Mack Trucks, and others, will be protected from the onslaught of external interference.”
Trump stated that new taxes on kitchen and bathroom cabinets and certain other furniture were imposed to counter high imports, which harm the interests of local manufacturers.
