Walmart & Google Launch “Agent-Led Commerce”

In a move that could redefine how we shop online, Walmart and Google have officially joined forces. Announced on January 11, 2026, at the National Retail Federation (NRF) Big Show, this partnership introduces a concept called "Agent-Led Commerce."

The big idea? You can now discover and buy Walmart products directly through Google’s Gemini AI, without ever visiting the Walmart website or app.

"Search and Scroll"

For the last two decades, online shopping has looked the same: type a keyword, scroll through pages of results, and click on links. This partnership aims to replace that tedious process with a simple conversation.

Instead of searching for "ski gear," you can now just talk to Gemini.

How It Works in Real Life: Imagine you type this into Google Gemini: "I'm planning a winter ski trip for a family of four. What do we need?"

  1. The AI Plans: Gemini analyzes your request and suggests a complete packing list—jackets, goggles, thermal layers, and hand warmers.
  2. The AI Shops: Thanks to a new integration, Gemini doesn't just show you pictures. It pulls real, purchasable items directly from Walmart’s inventory that match your specific needs.
  3. The AI Buys: You can add those items to your cart and check out right there in the chat.

Why This Is Better for Shoppers

The integration links your Walmart and Google accounts to create a smoother experience that feels personalized to you.

  • It Remembers You: If you ask Gemini to "reorder my usual snacks," it checks your Walmart purchase history to know exactly which brand of chips you like.
  • One Cart, Two Worlds: Items you find through the AI are synced to your regular Walmart cart. You can add a tent suggested by Gemini and a gallon of milk from the Walmart app, then buy them all at once.
  • Fast Delivery: Even though you are shopping on Google, you still get Walmart’s logistics speed, including same-day delivery and drone shipping in supported cities.

Universal Commerce Protocol

Making this work required a new kind of technology. Google and Walmart (along with partners like Target and Shopify) built the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP).

Think of UCP as a "universal translator" for shopping. It allows an AI agent (like Gemini) to talk to a retailer's warehouse system instantly. The goal is to build an open standard so that eventually, you can shop from any store using your favorite AI assistant, preventing any single company (like Amazon) from controlling the entire market.

For Walmart, this is about being everywhere you are. As more people turn to AI chatbots for advice, Walmart wants to ensure its products are the answer to your questions. For Google, it proves that its AI can do more than just write emails—it can be a powerful, revenue-generating shopping assistant.
