Amazon Launches First Pittsburgh-Area “Same-Day” Facility in Imperial

Amazon has officially accelerated its delivery capabilities in Western Pennsylvania with the launch of its first-ever Same-Day Delivery facility in the Pittsburgh area.

Located in Findlay Township (Imperial) at 270 Solar Drive, the new 191,000-square-foot facility is designed to serve the Greater Pittsburgh region, including Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, Washington, and Westmoreland counties. Its service range also extends across state lines to parts of West Virginia (Wheeling) and Ohio (from East Liverpool to Steubenville).

Built for Speed: The "Sub-Same Day" Model

Unlike traditional fulfillment centers that may take a day or two to process orders, this new facility is part of Amazon’s "Sub-Same Day" (SSD) network. These specialized buildings are a hybrid of a warehouse and a delivery station under one roof. They are smaller than massive fulfillment hubs but are located closer to population centers to dramatically reduce transit times.

The Imperial facility stocks the top 100,000 most popular items—ranging from household essentials and electronics to pet supplies and baby products. Because inventory is stored, sorted, and deployed for delivery all from this single location, Amazon can fulfill orders "from click to doorstep" in as little as a few hours.

According to Amazon spokespeople, the facility was "designed for speed" to meet the demand for immediate gratification, particularly for last-minute holiday shopping.

Economic Impact and Jobs

The launch has created more than 100 full-time and part-time jobs in the region. Roles at the facility involve picking, packing, and sorting customer orders, with average pay reported around $23 per hour plus benefits.

Local officials, including Allegheny County Executive Sara Innamorato, have praised the investment, noting that it positions the county as a "hub of innovation" for logistics. Since 2010, Amazon has invested more than $33 billion in Pennsylvania, creating thousands of direct jobs.

For Prime members in the coverage area, this launch means that eligible items ordered in the morning can arrive by that afternoon or evening. The facility operates with a specific focus on efficiency, utilizing advanced robotics to speed up the fulfillment process. While "Same-Day" delivery has technically been available for some items previously (often fulfilled from further away or via other networks), this dedicated local hub significantly expands the selection and reliability of ultra-fast shipping for Pittsburgh residents.
