Correctly shipping electronic products to the United States

Shipping electronics can be tricky. Whether you're sending a laptop, smartphone, gaming console, or other gadgets, it's important to pack them the right way to avoid damage. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to help you pack and ship electronics safely.

1. Properly Pack and Ship Electronics

1. Back Up Your Data

Before you do anything else, back up your files. In case your device gets lost or damaged during shipping, you won’t lose important documents, photos, or work.

2. Turn Off and Unplug

Make sure the device is powered off and unplugged from any power source. Remove any accessories, such as batteries, chargers, or memory cards, and pack them separately (but in the same box).

3. Use the Original Packaging (If You Have It)

The original box is usually the best option because it's designed to fit the product perfectly. If you still have it, place the item back in its original foam or padding and then put it in a sturdy shipping box.

4. No Original Box? No Problem.

If you don’t have the original packaging, here’s what to do:

  • Wrap the device in bubble wrap (at least 2–3 layers).
  • Place it in a sturdy cardboard box that’s slightly bigger than the item.
  • Fill any empty space in the box with packing peanuts, foam, or crumpled paper to prevent movement.
  • Seal the box with strong packing tape.

5. Label Fragile Items

Clearly mark the box with “FRAGILE” and “THIS SIDE UP” stickers to alert the shipping carrier. This helps reduce the chance of rough handling.

2. Transportation rules of the destination country

Different countries/regions have different regulations for the transportation of electronic devices. The United States generally allows individuals to import electronic devices, but if the value exceeds a certain amount (such as $800), customs duties may be payable. Devices containing lithium batteries must comply with aviation safety regulations and must be correctly labelled and packaged. Therefore, we recommend that you carefully read the guidelines of the destination country before shipping to avoid delays or confiscation of goods at customs.

3. Insure Your Package

Electronics can be expensive. Always buy shipping insurance for the full value of the item. That way, if it gets lost or damaged, you can file a claim and get reimbursed.

4. Track Your Shipment

Once the package is on its way, use the tracking number to monitor its journey. Let the recipient know when to expect the delivery.

5. Selecting the right logistics service provider

You need a reliable logistics service provider. Are your goods being transported from China to the United States, Canada, or the United Kingdom?
Linktrans provides transportation services to these countries, and our certified international experts will make your shipment journey smooth and convenient—from door-to-door pickup to tracking your package with real-time order status updates.

Bonus Tips

  • Avoid shipping electronics during extreme weather (excessive heat or cold can damage devices).
  • If you’re shipping internationally, check customs rules and include the correct paperwork.
  • For extra protection, consider using double-boxing — place the padded box inside a slightly larger box with more padding.
