Amazon has shut down a service that offered same-day delivery to malls and brick-and-mortar retailers, according to media reports.

The cessation of the programme resulted in the dismissal of some 175 employees.

The spokesperson cited increasing overlap between Amazon's same-day and one-day delivery offerings and Amazon Today.

Amazon Today Same-Day Delivery Service is a shipping option provided by Amazon that allows customers to receive their orders on the same day they are placed.

In 2022, Amazon is offering same-day delivery in 10 cities across the U.S. from clothing shops PacSun, Diesel and Superdry, as well as vitamin retailer GNC.Amazon says the service is free for Prime members who spend $25 or more, and $2.99 for those who spend less than $25.

The decision to shut down the “same-day delivery service” came as a surprise to most, but it was one of Amazon's major cost-cutting moves. Over the past two years, Amazon has been ramping up layoffs as it faces a weakening consumer market, and has laid off more than 27,000 employees as of 2024.
